When you think of the importance of social activities and play for children you may think about how they learn to interact with others, build friendships, and keep their brains and bodies healthy as they grow. For adults, social activities help to counterbalance the stress of work and lead to happy, fulfilling lives. The same principle applies to remaining socially active as a senior and its often easily forgot how much fun can be had regardless of age!  The importance of play and having fun cant be overstated for everyone.  Particularly as we get older we can experience issues which can affect our health and happiness.  Joyful pursuits can make us feel alive, help us engage and connect, which is why we should all give ourselves permission to play!  We want to give back to our communities with our childrens yoga for seniors classes helping everyone to stay active as they age whilst benefiting socially, emotionally and physically from our yoga classes in the following ways:

  • Improve how your brain works. The human brain needs stimulation and interaction helps this as well as social activities to help those neurons fire in the brain.  childrens yoga for seniors can help keep the brain and body actively engaged. Not only are social activities enjoyable, but they also keep the minds of seniors sharp and healthy.  To help maintain memory and optimize the ability to learn new things then Playing and having fun—on a regular basis—can help you avoid memory problems and enhance your creativity and mental sharpness.
  • Heal, establish, or maintain relationships. Our social lives are incredibly important for our overall well-being. However, a lot of seniors are lonely. In fact, on average, seniors without spouses or partners spend about 10 hours alone each day. But fun and play can enable seniors to make new friends or improve existing relationships. After all, things like laughter and friendly competition are known to increase harmony, trust, empathy, and intimacy among people who experience them together.  Not connecting with socially activities can at times make people withdraw from the world and suffer physical, mental, and emotional consequences due to a lack of social stimulation
  • Improve your mental and emotional well-being. Do you like the way you feel when you have a brighter outlook on life and your sense of time recedes into the background? Engaging in fun and playful activities can expand your optimism, multiply your moments of joy, and reduce your stress. It can even help you prevent depression.  According to a 2012 study by Statistics Canada, older individuals who engaged in regular social activities reported higher self-perception and lower levels of loneliness and life dissatisfaction. According to another study by the University of Rochester, older adults see health benefits including the reduced risk of cardiovascular problems, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and mental health issues such as depression when they are socially active.
  • Extend your life and improve your physical vitality. Who doesn’t want to feel younger or more energetic? Creating plenty of fun moments in your life can be a good way to boost your immune system, reduce your risk of illness, and minimize your perception of any existing pain you might already have.  Socially engaging activities are a great way for seniors to learn new skills and sharpen existing talents and your never too old or young to learn!  Yoga can help increase confidence.  Our childrens yoga for seniors classes can can also calm and balance the mind whilst maintain integrity, self-assurance, and independence while making for a more wholesome and healthier life.
