Kalma Minds & Wellbeing

Secondary schools and colleges

Yoga for children in secondary schools and colleges to future proof their emotional and physical wellbeing

Accredited by the International Institute of Complementary Therapists and approved by Westminster Indemnity.  Voted Best sport and physical activity 2019 and 2020.

Aside from the physical benefits yoga brings to young adults it teaches techniques for coping with the unique issues they’re faced with everyday—insecurity about their changing bodies, the enormous pressure to fit in, stressful schedules, and uncertainty about their beliefs and their futures.  A regular yoga practice during these years can help to balance the body’s chemistry and physiology and it will benefit the mind, body and soul.

PHSE curriculum or Enrichment Sessions

Yoga is an holistic system of mind–body practices for mental and physical health.
Involving multiple components such as physical postures and exercises to promote strength and flexibility, breathing exercises to enhance respiratory functioning.

Deep relaxation techniques are used to cultivate the ability to mentally and physiologically release tension and stress, and meditation/mindfulness practices to enhance mind–body awareness and improve attention and emotion regulation skills.

Lunch time and after school classes

Many schools are now offering movement and mindfulness programs to help reduce stress, improve mood, and promote physical fitness. Yoga during this formative period is useful for developing healthy exercise habits in general as well as strength, flexibility, and balance.

Yoga programs can provide positive effects on factors such as emotional balance, attentional control, cognitive efficiency, anxiety, negative thought patterns, emotional and physical arousal, reactivity, and negative behavior. Additional research also suggests positive effects of school-based yoga programs on several aspects of mental health such as concentration, attention, anxiety, stress, mood, resilience, emotional arousal, self-esteem, and coping frequency.

Anti Bullying, School Sports and Mental Health Week

Our yoga sessions create accepting environments for our young adults as we believe this helps them feel welcomed and valued. Kalma Life offers an inclusive yoga program for teens and young adults which can give a great sense of belonging.

Kalma Minds & Wellbeing supports the Anti-Bullying Alliance and we take part each year in the week which falls in November. Our ethos is to be completely inclusive and we want to pass that on to the next generation too. Yoga can start anyone on to a journey to lifelong health and wellbeing, helps them to be empowered, comfortable in their own skin and work with others.

These sessions will focus on celebrating the differences in all of us. During the 45 minute free session children will experience sequences of yoga postures, breathing and mindfulness. Children can learn techniques to use in everyday life situations.

Contact us for information regarding booking us during these weeks.

Benefits of yoga and mindfulness for young adults…

”Ofsted requires every school to actively promote and evaluate students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development. Yoga classes support SMSC education by encouraging students to explore and reflect on life purpose, cause and effect, resilience, obstacles, relationships, feelings and emotions.”

“Yoga and mindfulness can be taught as part of the PE curriculum – Part of PHSE curriculum – An elective in an enrichment programme – A lunch time or after-school club activity – An intervention to maximise the achievement of disadvantaged students”

Research has shown that the number of young people reporting feelings of depression and anxiety is rising and there is a trend for the rates of these disorders to increase in the transition between childhood and adolescence.” Amy Morgan, Institute of Psychological Sciences, University of Leeds

”Yoga is fully inclusive and non competitive.  Sporty students do yoga to develop performance in their game.  Non sporty people like yoga because it’s a non-competitive way to keep active.  Boys practice it to increase stamina, strength and confidence in relation to their body as it grows and changes.  Girls enjoy relaxation and flexibility exercises which promote emotional and physical wellbeing.  Students with Special Educational Needs enjoy and benefit from stretching and relaxation”

Yoga helps teenagers deal with changing emotions, as well as physically nurturing the body’s flexibility. It provides a safe, secure, non-competitive environment, a space of deep acceptance where diversity is valued and encouraged. It helps to build self-confidence and offers a framework for teens to see positive shifts, without the pressure of needing to change. It is a joyful space to ‘be’ and a chance for much needed relaxation. Yoga is a wonderful platform for teens to work on self-acceptance, self-love and to generally make positive changes in their lives”
