Maternal Mental Health
A taboo subject and should be spoken about so much more than it is. There is no shame here.
More than one in 10 women develop a mental illness during the time of pregnancy, or within the first year of having a baby and yet, many will suffer in silence. This might be a new mental health problem or another episode of a mental health problem you’ve experienced before. These are known as perinatal mental health problems.
This year’s week-long campaign is dedicated to talking about mental illness during pregnancy or after having a baby and signposting to support for all mums. The focus is on advocating for mums affected by maternal mental health and helping them to access the information and help they need to enable recovery.
According to ‘Mind’ ‘Having a baby is a big life event, and it’s natural to experience a range of emotions and reactions during and after your pregnancy. But if they start to have a big impact on how you live your life, you might be experiencing a mental health problem.
Many of us at some point in a week will feel lonely, struggle on and may feel generally over whelmed. #therforher is about showing mums that are struggling that you understand and support them. That they are not alone, and that it’s OK to feel the way they are. Our Kalma mamas pre natal and post natal classes can offer you the chance to unwind and talk freely about your ups and downs as we know it can not all be perfect.
So be the person who talks to the Mum say on her own at a baby or toddler group. Be the person who talks to that Mum who stands on her own each day at the school gates. Be that person who supports other mums not forgetting even when they look like they have it nailed they still maybe be struggling.
Because #MumsMatter
