Yoga and mindfulness have been shown in studies to radically improve both physical and mental health in school-age children (ages 6 to 12). Yoga itself improves balance, strength, endurance, and aerobic capacity in children. Whilst mindfulness can offer psychological benefits for children too.

Many children today are using Yoga as a way to deal with stress and regulate themselves. Yoga provides training of mind and body to bring emotional balance within. We argue that children and young people need such tools to listen inward to their bodies, feelings, and ideas. Yoga may assist them in developing in sound ways, to strengthen themselves, and be contributing social beings.

Children today face much more pressure from the outside world and society.  Pressure from social media, being academic in school and a standard of outside image are just some. Children experience stress and mental health challenges from globalisation which expose  the youth all over the world to various new demands, standards, and options.

A child on a path of yoga can help them gain life long tools of confidence, diversity and confidence. In a typical Kalma Junior children’s yoga class we teach this through a series of postures, breathing techniques and mindfulness activity.

Postures such as warrior and mountain pose can teach children to be strong and powerful. Whilst the simplicity of savasana in a children’s yoga can teach them to relax switching off their minds from any distractions.  Children’s yoga can help children to deal with stressful situations through breathing and mindfulness techniques which are commonly used in our classes.
