Here at Kalma Life we encourage healthy living in all aspects of life and support #WearRedDay . Our yoga classes for babies, toddlers and juniors alike, are designed to instil in children the value of a healthy body and mind. Kalma Classes specialises in yoga for children and harnessing the developmental benefits of yoga.
However, yoga is generally beneficial for the health and wellbeing of everyone, regardless of age. Kalma Life takes health and wellbeing seriously, and we like to get involved with spreading awareness for causes related to health, as well as sharing our own advice on how we think yoga can help.
Today, is #WearRedDay, which was created to raise awareness for heart disease.
According to the British Heart Foundation (2015), over 7 million people in the UK are living with CVD (Cardiovascular Disease). CVD is a serious condition but can be managed through a regime of healthy eating, regular exercise, healthy routines and maintained blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
Yoga is generally associated with a healthy mind and body. But did you know that yoga keeps your heart healthy too?
A review of yoga and cardiovascular disease published in the ‘European Journal of Preventive Cardiology’ indicates that yoga can help to lower the risk of heart disease. Within the review, it was shown that those who took yoga classes saw improvements in a number of factors that affect heart disease risk, lost an average of five pounds, reduced their blood pressure by five points, and decreased their levels of harmful LDL cholesterol by 12 points.
Yoga is a combination of physical activity, breathing, and meditation. All of which positively affects cardiovascular risk factors.
• Yoga postures work by gently stretching and exercising muscles, which helps them become more sensitive to insulin (which is important for controlling blood sugar).
• Deep breathing can help lower blood pressure.
• Meditation helps to calm the mind, quiet the nervous system and eases stress.
All of these improvements may help prevent heart disease, and can help people with cardiovascular problems.
